About:

This fair is held at Yellamma temple that is situated in Saundatti area of Belgaum district. Yelamma devi is worshipped in this holy sanctum. The temple is situated on the top of the hill that is known as Yellammagudda.The fairs are held many times amidst October and February, yet the celebration is at peak on the day of Margasira. The day sees the Neeramanavi Yellamma jatra that is carried out on big scale. Likewise Shakti puja devotees also worship deity yellamma in a spiritual manner.

During the eve of yellamma Devi fair, the women becomes Devdasis of god. This practice has been often rendered as spiritual prostitution by many non government organizations and social organizations. Pious devotees from different districts of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashthra, Goa and Madhya Pradesh give their active participation in the car festival and the yellamma fair.

History of Shri Yellamma Devi Fair:

Shri Yellamma Devi fair at Saundatti is held about 5 times between October and February. But the largest is the one held on the full moon day of Margasira.

Importance:

Yellamma Temple, also known as Renuka Devi Temple, is situated on top of a hill near Saundatti in Karnataka. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Yellamma or Renuka Devi. The temple is mainly visited by pilgrims from Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.Shri Yellamma Devi Fair, celebrated for about 5 times between October and February, is a major draw. Yellamma jatra, which takes place on the full moon day known as 'Bharat Hunnime', attracts thousands of devotees from far and near. During the jatra, Yellamma is worshipped complete with all its attendant rituals, as in the manner of 'Shakti Puja'.

Sri Shidlingappa's fair is observed on Shivaratri day. On this day the deity is taken in a palanquin accompanied by drummers (Dollu and Majalu) from several neighbouring villages to the river. The deity is then worshipped.
