About:

Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary in Southern Karnataka state of South India. It is located in Kodagu district and is spread over 105 km² and lies in the Western Ghats. This sanctuary is named after Talakaveri, the origin of the Cauvery River which lies on the eastern edge of the sanctuary. The origin of the river Cauvery is place of religious importance for the people of Kodagu.

Talakaveri was declared as Wildlife Sanctuary on 31 Aug / 1 Sep 1987. Talakaveri wildlife sanctuary is spread about 105.01 sq. km and it is covered with tropical evergreen forests. A few coffee and cardamom plantations are also covered within the sanctuary.

Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuary is home to mammals like Elephant, Tiger, Jackal, Gaur, Wild pig, Sloth bear, Lion-tailed Macaque, Leopard, Leopard cat, Wild dog, Nilgiri Marten, Common Palm Civet, Brown Palm Civet,Bonnet Macaque, Common Langur, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Giant Flying Squirrel, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Clawless otter, Common Mongoose, Brown Mongoose, Striped-Necked Mongoose, Ruddy Mongoose and Porcupine.

Snakes that are found in Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuary include the king cobra, rat snake, cobra and python.

Dipterocarpus indicus, Hopea parviflora, Dysoxylum malabaricum, Pallaquim ellipticum, Mesua ferrea and Artocarpus lakoocha are some of the species of flora found in this sanctuary.

Talakaveri wildlife sanctuary also houses interesting birds like Great pied hornbill, Malabar trogon, fairy bluebird, broadbilled roller and black eagle.

Flora and fauna :Albizia lebbeck, Artocarpus lakoocha, Dysoxylum malabaricum and Mesua ferrea' are some of the species of flora found here. Clawless otter, elephant, tiger, Stripe-necked mongoose and mouse deer are some of the animal species found here. Fairy bluebird, Malabar trogon and Broadbilled roller are some of the avian species found.

The Talakaveri area is also ideal for trekking. Mt.Thavoor is a towering peak overlooking Bhagamandala,and Mt.Koppatti, which may be considered it's twin peak is nearby and both these serve as fantastic trekking routes for anyone wishing to savour the mesmerising beauty of the Shola forest range.

Road Transport:Talakaveri is well connected by roads. One can reach this sanctuary from Bangalore via Mysore, Madikeri, Kushalanagar, Bhagamandala. And from Mangalore via Puttur, Sulliya, Madikeri, Bhagamandala.

Nearest Visiting places:

It is a common practice for pilgrims to take a dip in the triveni sangama and perform rituals to their ancestors before proceeding to Talakaveri, the birthplace of Kaveri. During Tula Sankramana which falls on October 17th or 18th, pilgrims assemble here in large numbers.

A short distance from the triveni sangama, there is a famous temple known as Sri Bhagandeshwara temple, where Bhagandeshwara (Ishwara), Subramanya, Mahavishnu and Ganapati idols are installed. This place is also known as Bhagandeshwara Kshetra, from which the name Bhagamandala is derived. The temples in this area are built in Kerala style which is also similar to the temples in Nepal.

Between Heggedemane and Kumar Parvat: Kudre doddi, small shed with thatched roof and cement base built by the wildlife wing officials for patrolling forest personnel to rest. Between Kukke Subramanya and Kumar Parvat: The small flat ground behind Kallu Mantapa is good ground for trekkers to pitch tents during non-monsoons. And Bhatru’s house at Giri gaddeThere are many sites to pitch tents and camp during non-monsoons, but this has to be done only under the supervision of the local forest officials.
