About:
Kunchikal Falls, located in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, is one of India’s highest waterfalls, with an impressive height of approximately 455 meters (1,493 feet). Formed by the Varahi River, Kunchikal Falls cascades through rugged, lush terrains, making it a breathtaking natural wonder that draws nature lovers, photographers, and adventure seekers. This multi-tiered waterfall, surrounded by dense forests, offers a stunning display during the monsoon season when the water flow is at its peak. Kunchikal Falls is not only known for its beauty but also plays a role in hydroelectric power generation. The region surrounding the falls is ecologically rich, home to diverse flora and fauna, adding to its allure as a scenic yet relatively untouched destination. Due to the presence of the Mani Dam and the Varahi Hydro Electric Project, access to the base of the falls is restricted, making it more of an offbeat destination compared to other waterfalls in Karnataka. However, visitors can still enjoy the views from certain vantage points in the nearby hills, capturing the essence of this majestic waterfall amidst the tranquil Western Ghats. A visit to Kunchikal Falls offers a unique blend of natural beauty, ecological importance, and an insight into Karnataka’s hydroelectric projects.

History:
Kunchikal Falls holds a significant place in Karnataka’s natural landscape, owing much of its form and function to the Varahi River and the Western Ghats. Over time, this waterfall became a crucial water source, not only contributing to the natural ecosystem but also supporting the Varahi Hydro Electric Project established in the region. The project began in the 1980s as Karnataka’s first underground power station, which involved diverting water from Kunchikal Falls for power generation. As a result, Kunchikal Falls has taken on dual importance—serving as both a natural marvel and an essential component of Karnataka's renewable energy initiatives. The falls have inspired awe and reverence among locals and travelers alike, and local legends add to its mystique, associating the falls with divine blessings for the region’s prosperity. Today, with controlled access due to the hydroelectric project, Kunchikal Falls serves as an example of the state’s efforts to balance ecological preservation with sustainable energy production. Though visitors cannot access the base directly, the falls remain a sight to behold from designated viewpoints, allowing one to appreciate its historical and environmental significance. This combination of history, natural beauty, and modern functionality makes Kunchikal Falls a remarkable landmark in Karnataka’s Western Ghats, symbolizing the convergence of nature and innovation.
