Basavaraja Durga is a fascinating historical island fortress off the coast of Karnataka, India. History of Basavaraja Durga:

The fort on Basavaraja Durga Island was built by the Vijayanagara Empire and later taken over by the Keladi dynasty. Named after Basavaraja, a Keladi ruler, the fort served as a strategic defense point against invaders, particularly for protecting coastal trade routes. Its location made it an ideal watchpoint for naval activities, with its high walls and watchtowers offering a vantage view of the surrounding waters. The walls and remnants of the fort echo stories of military resilience and architectural prowess from an era long past. Although now in ruins, the fort is a reminder of the region's historical significance and maritime strength.

In the 10th century text Jain Ramayana, the town is mentioned as Hanuruha Island. References about the town are also available in the works of Abu al-Fida (A.D.1273-1331), an Arab Geographer as well as that of Ibn Batuta who described it as the city of Hinaur.
