About:

The Kali River, also known as the Kalinadi, is a prominent river in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, India. Flowing through the scenic forests and valleys of Uttara Kannada district, the river plays a crucial role in the region’s ecology and economy. It’s famous for its rich biodiversity, forested landscapes, and hydroelectric projects. Location info:
The Kali River originates in the Western Ghats near the village of Uttara Kannada in Karnataka and flows westward across a distance of 184 km before merging with the Arabian Sea near Karwar. The river passes through important towns like Dandeli and Supa, and its basin covers large parts of the Uttara Kannada district.

Climate/Weather:
Summer (March-May): Warm and humid, with temperatures ranging between 25°C to 35°C. Monsoon (June-September): Heavy rainfall due to the Western Ghats, often causing the river to swell and offering a spectacular view of the forest in full bloom. Winter (October-February): Pleasant and cool, with temperatures between 15°C to 28°C, making it an ideal season for outdoor activities.

History:
The Kali River holds historical and cultural importance for the local communities, as well as economic significance for the state. The river was a source of sustenance for the tribes of Uttara Kannada and later became integral to the area’s hydroelectric and irrigation needs. Major dams, like the Supa Dam and Kadra Dam, were built on the river to harness its power for electricity, providing energy to a large part of the state.

River Rafting: Kali River is famous for its white-water rafting, especially near Dandeli, where enthusiasts can enjoy a thrilling adventure amidst rapids. Kayaking and Coracle Rides: Visitors can try kayaking in calmer sections of the river or take a coracle (traditional round boat) ride to experience the river’s serene beauty. Jungle Safari: The Kali Tiger Reserve offers safaris, where one can spot a variety of wildlife, including tigers, leopards, and elephants. Bird Watching and Photography: The river attracts various bird species, and the surrounding landscape provides scenic photography opportunities.

One could also go on one of the most scenic wildernes safaris in jeeps and also for nature walks. Elephant rides in our campus is another major attraction.There is plenty of bird-life and animals here at the Kali Wilderness Camp, but the sighting of animals is a matter of chance.

The Camp and the River Kali live in harmony and this camp brings you closer to the greens and browns of nature. The wildlife sanctuary here spans an area of approximately 400 sq km of bamboo and moist deciduous trees. A liberal growth of thyme and basil permeate the air as you trek through it.

Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary: A popular spot for wildlife enthusiasts, this sanctuary is home to elephants, leopards, bison, and several bird species, including hornbills. Supa Dam: Built on the Kali River, this large hydroelectric project offers scenic views of the reservoir and surrounding forests. Kadra Dam: Another major dam on the Kali, Kadra Dam is known for its engineering significance and beautiful viewpoints. Syntheri Rocks: A massive monolithic rock formation near Dandeli, offering unique natural beauty and a serene river view.

Mobile network coverage is good in the towns of Dandeli and Karwar but may be limited in remote and forested sections of the Kali River basin, particularly inside the wildlife sanctuary.

How to reach?
Nearest Railway Station: Karwar, Dandeli, and Alnavar have railway stations with connectivity to major cities in Karnataka. Hubli Junction, about 75 km from Dandeli, is another major railhead.
Nearest Airport: The nearest airport is Goa International Airport, around 130 km from Dandeli. Alternatively, Hubli Airport is approximately 75 km from Dandeli.
Road Transport: The Kali River area is well-connected by road, with regular buses and taxis available from nearby cities like Hubli, Karwar, and Goa.

Nearest Visiting places:
Karwar: A coastal town known for its beaches, including Devbagh Beach and Rabindranath Tagore Beach. Anshi National Park: A nearby forested area known for its rich biodiversity and part of the Kali Tiger Reserve. Gokarna: A popular pilgrimage and beach town located about 110 km from Dandeli, famous for the Mahabaleshwar Temple and Om Beach.

Petrol pumps are available in Dandeli, Karwar, and along major highways leading to the Kali River area. It’s advisable to refuel in these towns before exploring rural or forested areas.

#Travel light if you are using local transport to get to Dandeli.

#If you are not physically fit, opt out of visiting Kavala caves as there are over a thousand steps to climb
#Carry a pair of powerful binoculars to view the birds and crocodiles on the river
#A jacket and a cap are must-takes all through the year. It is also advisable to carry a torch
