Darya Bahadurgadh

Darya Bahadurgadh Island

About:

Darya Bahadurgadh is a historic island fort located on an islet in the Bhima River near Kalaburagi (Gulbarga), Karnataka. This small yet impressive fort was built by Bahadur Khan, a governor of the Deccan region, and remains one of the lesser-known but architecturally significant sites of the medieval period. Surrounded by water, Darya Bahadurgadh served both as a strategic defense location and as a retreat from nearby conflicts. The fort’s robust walls, intricate arches, and pathways give visitors a glimpse into its past glory and the strategic acumen of its builders. Often overlooked in mainstream tourism, Darya Bahadurgadh offers a peaceful and scenic escape, especially during the monsoon season when the river swells, enhancing the fort’s picturesque appeal. Though compact in size, the fort’s well-preserved structures, such as its gates, bastions, and inner chambers, allow visitors to step back in time and experience the fort’s historical atmosphere. The island fort is accessible only by boat, adding to its charm as a secluded hideaway. Known locally as “Bahadurgad Killa,” it holds an important place in the heritage of Karnataka and is a unique site for history buffs and adventure seekers.

Situated just 6 Km from Udupi, Malpe beach is the most gracious beaches of all. No other beach offers so much calm and tranquility mixed with such stupendous beauty. Lying under the shadow of swaying palm trees, listening to the winds ruffling its leaves, rejuvenates the soul to the deepest.

When on Darya Bahadurgadh, do not forget to explore the island of Malpe beach. Another island, to where you can plan a trip to, is St. Mary's Island. The island is 300 m long and 100 m wide and its uniqueness is in the basalt rock formations that rise abruptly from the sea bed in various shapes.

History of Darya Bahadurgadh:

The history of Darya Bahadurgadh dates back to the late medieval period when it was constructed by Bahadur Khan, a prominent governor and military leader in the Deccan region. Bahadur Khan was responsible for maintaining security in the Gulbarga area, which had witnessed multiple invasions over the centuries due to its strategic importance as a gateway to the Deccan. Built as a defensive outpost, the island fort allowed Bahadur Khan to control access to the Bhima River and serve as a surveillance point over the surrounding region. During its heyday, the fort was equipped with powerful bastions and high walls that made it difficult for invaders to breach. The architectural style of Darya Bahadurgadh combines elements of Persian, Turkish, and local Deccan design, evident in the intricately carved stone walls, arches, and gates. The fort witnessed several historical events, including skirmishes and periods of brief occupation by various rulers who sought control over the fort's strategic position. While it gradually fell out of use after the British established dominance in the region, Darya Bahadurgadh has remained a symbol of the local resistance and military ingenuity. Over time, it has become a cultural relic, with many historians and archaeologists working to preserve its structural integrity and historical significance. Today, Darya Bahadurgadh stands as a testament to the martial heritage of the Deccan rulers and offers a unique insight into the fortifications of the time.
