Kalhatti Falls start at the top of the Chandra Drona Hill, from a height of 45m to flow before the Veerabhadreshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated 10km from Kemmangundi, Kalahatti is about 250 km form Bangalore. Two kilometers from Ozone Valley is the famous Kalhatti falls where the water falls from a height of 403 ft. Annual fair (Jatra) held every year during February/March, which attracts thousands of devotees.

Kalhatti Falls is located at Kallattipura in Chikmagalur district of Karnataka. The waterfall is only 10 kilometers away from Kemmangundi hill station and is a must visit for tourists of Karnataka. Kalhatti Falls is not just famous for its waterfall but also for the adjoining flora and fauna that surrounds it.

An 8-hour drive from Bangalore, along the muddy mountainous tracks and hairpin turns, the picturesque hill station of Kemmangundi is enchanting for any who wishes to visit it. A summer retreat for erstwhile Wodeyar ruler, Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV it has beautiful laid gardens, magnificent mountain ranges and splendid valleys, excellent visual treat for the tourists.

Kalhatti Falls is a hot spot for the trekkers who carry out their trekking exercises on the adjoining hills and mountains. Tarikere which is sited at a distance of 35 kilometers is haunted by trekkers from all across the globe.

The trek: The trek is plain ascent. Many routes to the top of the falls beckon you. There is apparantly a route adjacent to the falls which is rocky and maybe slippery during rains. An alternate route is through the coffee plantations of Blue Mountain Estates which would require the services of a guide. The downside of this path is that it essentially is a jeep track.

A good place to end the trek is Santaveri on the other side of the hill. This is also well connected to Birur with buses every hour or so. (Santaveri - Birur takes about an hour on road). The Hubli-Bangalore Jan Shatabdhi express leaves Birur at 1655 and gets you to Bangalore by 2030.
This could be a decent itenary to follow.

Flora and fauna: Kalhatti Falls is not just famous for its waterfall but also for the adjoining flora and fauna that surrounds it.
Pilgrim Center: Water here cascades down from a height of 122 metres (400 ft) amidst fascinating natural setting. It is said that this place has once hosted the hermitages of sage Agastya. A legend also associates him with the deity Veerabhadra for whom there is a temple here constructed in a gap between rocks. This is a cave temple with three stone carvings of three elephants at the entrance. Water cascades over these elephants and devotees believe that these waters have healing power.

How to reach?

The route from Bangalore is through Tumkur - Tiptur - Arsikere - Kadur - Birur on NH206. The road from Birur to Lingadahalli is about 15 kms. From there, there is a fork whose left arm goes to Santaveri and continues towards Chikmagalur and the right arm goes towards Kalhatti falls and Kemmangundi.

How to get there: Birur is a junction well connected on the Bangalore-Shimoga, Bangalore-Kolhapur, Bangalore-Hubli or Yeshwantpur-Vasco routes. The Shimoga Express leaves Bangalore at 2310 and reaches Birur at an unearthly hour of 0315. Buses from Birur towards Lingadahalli are at 0545, 0630 and quite regularly after that. These buses take about 30 mins. You can hire private vehicles to take you till Kalhattigiri (another 30 min ride on road)from where you can begin the trek.

The Mudumalai forest, the Bandipur forest, and plenty of cardamom trees can be found all in the same general area as Kalhatti Falls. It is also possible to experience some of India's exotic wildlife in the area of the falls. Bear, tigers, elephants, and monkeys can all be seen in that region.

  • Kemmanagundi - Situated a few kilometers from Ozone Valley & situated at a height of 4,732 ft. above sea level

  • Kalhatti Falls - Two kilometers from Ozone Valley is the famous Kalhatti falls where the water falls from a height of 403 ft. Annual fair (Jatra) held every year during February/March, which attracts thousands of devotees.

  • Hebbe Falls - Eight kilometers from Kemmanagundi is Hebbe falls where the water gushes from a height of 554 ft. Though the road to Hebbe falls is bad, the journey is memorable.

  • Muthodi - Thirty two kilometers from Chikkamagalur town is Muthodi, known for its wildlife sanctuary and the backwaters of Bhadra reservoir. While driving through this sanctuary, you can feast your eyes on a variety of wild animals like Bisons, Panthers, Wild boars, Sambars, etc.

  • Baba Budan Giri - Twenty eight kilometers from Chikkamagalur is the Baba Budan range, named after the Muslim saint who legend says brought seven seeds of coffee from Yemen in the 17th century and the cultivation of which spread to other regions.

  • Mullayana Giri situated at a height of 6355 ft. above sea level is one of the highest mountain peaks between the Himalayas and Nilgiris. Dattatreya Peetha situated here is venerated both by Hindus and Muslims.

  • Belur and Halebid - Forty kilometers from Chikkamagalur, are the world famous temples of Belur and Halebid, built during Hoysala dynasty nearly 800 years ago and known for the intricate carvings and pillars.
